Hannah Marcus x 2
I've had the pleasure of doing two sittings with musician and artist Hannah Marcus in recent years. We were introduced by longtime friend Mark Lipsitz, from Hannah’s label Bar/None Records.
In the initial shoot, nearly two years ago, we shot at her Brooklyn home, and then at Coney Island. I took an “all in” approach, shooting for many hours, and multiple locations. I recognized that Marcus is a rare artist, one with a long pedigree, but also a burning intensity to make this moment count.
For our latest session, we met at her mother’s empty Upper West Side apartment. The space was bare, but the large window caught great evening light—just enough to work with as the sun set.
Marcus, like myself, has a strong personality. One of the reasons I think that she enjoys shooting with me is that I’m not easily manipulated or bullied. When the client and the subject are the same person, I have to strike a careful balance of being flexible and open, but also with a clear sense of direction. I want to be ready to pivot with her creative inspiration, but also I need to give the session some structure and order.
I am energized by working with wild artists like Hannah Marcus, so when the opportunity comes up again, I’ll be game!
