Guardian Magazine 20

This month marks 20 years of working with The Guardian Saturday Magazine.

Amazingly, I’m still commissioned by Kate Edwards, who first hired me in December of 2005 to photograph Alex Jamieson, who coincidentally I shot again for them last year.

A number of important photo editors have come through since including Louis Siroy, Anna Bassett, Amparo Escobedo, Liz Leahy, Tracey Tomlin, and Karin Andreasson. But the other constant has been Caroline Hunter, who joined shortly after Kate and has become a central force in the picture department.

I can’t fully explain why our relationship has lasted so long, but on a human level there’s a genuine goodwill at play — a sense of looking out for the photographer that goes beyond the usual transactional dynamic.

One example: when I was assigned to photograph Jesse Eisenberg in 2011 the publicist was pushing to get me to sign a restrictive agreement. When the magazine caught word of this, they stepped forward and made it clear that their photographer would not be bullied into signing something against his interest. I’d never seen an editorial client come forward like this before and I was quite moved by it.

I’m deeply grateful not only for the assignments (nearly 50 over 20 years), but for the consistant professionalism and generosity that have defined my long relationship with the Guardian Magazine photo team.
